Behind the Price: Independent Publishing, Amazon, and the True Value of a Magazine

When I created Wild Wisdom and Age Wellness, my intention was simple: to offer something real, seasonal, soulful, and beautifully made—especially for women who value meaning, reflection, and the quiet power of lived experience.

I wanted the magazine to feel like a little retreat in print form.
Something to hold.
To savour.
A moment of calm and connection.

I publish just four times a year, in tune with the seasons. Each edition is crafted slowly and with care: written, photographed, and edited by hand, from my quiet corner of the Scottish Highlands.

As a solo independent publisher, I use Amazon’s print-on-demand service to make the magazine available in paperback. I’m genuinely grateful this service exists, it’s a lifeline for those of us without large teams or upfront budgets.

But there are limitations.

While I initially set the price at £10.99, I’ve since reduced it to £10 to help keep it accessible. However, Amazon adds VAT and printing costs on top of this, meaning the final price shown to customers is around £12. That part is entirely out of my control.

I want to be transparent, because I know how important that is. I would never want readers to feel the magazine is overpriced, or worse, that I’m trying to make a large profit. The reality is, from each print copy sold, I earn less than £2.

But I still do it because it matters. Because women’s voices and stories matter. Because thoughtful, seasonal living matters.

If you’d prefer a lower-cost option, the digital PDF edition is also available directly through my website for £7. It’s beautifully designed and easy to read on tablets, laptops, or even phones.

Whichever format you choose, your support means the world to me. It helps me continue to write, photograph, edit, and publish a meaningful magazine—independently and with heart. Thank you for being part of this. Linda
