The Attraction of Light: Finding Magic in the Shadows

As a photographer, light is my constant companion and muse, especially during the darker months when a bright day pulls me outdoors. When I walk through woodlands with my camera in hand, my eyes are drawn irresistibly to the interplay of light and shadow. It is in these fleeting moments, when sunlight pierces through dense trees to illuminate a fern or a bramble leaf, that the magic happens.

Why does this light captivate me? Perhaps it’s the contrast. Against a dark woodland background, light becomes a spotlight, revealing intricate details that might otherwise go unnoticed. This contrast sharpens my perspective and sparks my inspiration, reminding me that even in darkness, there is beauty to be found.

Beyond its contrast, light in these settings feels almost magical. There’s an ephemeral quality to it, a fleeting presence that invites us to pause and observe. On a grey winter’s day, a sudden burst of sunlight feels like a gift, transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. It’s these moments that remind me why I love to capture what might otherwise be missed, to hold on to that magic for just a little longer.

For those who wish to see this light for themselves, the key is in slowing down. Woodland walks are perfect for this. Look for where the sun breaks through gaps in the trees, where it illuminates the forest floor or catches the edges of leaves. Pay attention to angles; light often works its wonders at low angles during early morning or late afternoon. And most importantly, allow yourself to be present. The beauty of light lies not just in what it reveals but in how it invites us to notice the world around us.

Step outside and seek out the light, you’ll find magic waiting for you too
